Seeing the Playground in an Unlikely Place In 2019, Leadership Foundations partnered with the Nairobi Leadership Foundation to launch a youth mentoring program in the heart of the world’s largest slum, Kibra. Working with local business and school partners to build 5 basketball courts, the Nairobi Leadership Foundation is using sports and the power of caring adult relationships to transform lives. We don’t just see vulnerable girls and boys, we see future leaders! See images of the work below Kibra is located about 4 miles from the Central business district of Nairobi with a population between 200,000-500,000. While known for being marked by extreme poverty, often overlooked is the immense creativity, resiliency, and resourcefulness of its people. In September 2019, the Nairobi Leadership Foundation gathered leaders, a local school, government officials and ministry partners to build a multi-sport court in the heart of Kibra. These courts can be used for basketball, volleyball, and tennis. the Nairobi Leadership Foundation is utilizing sports as an avenue to provide mentoring to children and youth in the area, as well as attract investment in water & sanitation and medical services from local businesses. A team of the LF Global Youth Initiative visited Kibra in September 2019, including Torrey Bates (pictured here) to support the coaching/mentoring curriculum development. Strathmore, one of the top private business schools in East Africa has partnered with the Nairobi Leadership Foundation to provide mentors to serve 53 girls in Kibra high schools. One can hardly turn a page in either the Old or New Testaments without running into this image of the table. And throughout Jesus’ public ministry, Jesus constantly found himself around the table with the unlikeliest gatherings. The importance of the table raises two questions for us to consider that frame 2019 for LF: Who is included at the table? and By sitting at the table, what is achieved? Throughout this 2019 Annual Report, you will see who has sat at LF’s table this past year. The 567,778 women, men, and children served by our network are those most marginalized in the cities we serve. They are young people who were mentored, the elderly who were provided loving care, and overlooked grassroots leaders who were developed on behalf of cities around the world. 13,000+ volunteers and 1,700+ partners joined the gathering. The LF table also included 188 different servings” for those at the table: joint initiatives promoting reading, financial literacy, prison reform & rehabilitation, college access, healthcare, and legal representation, just to name a few. Thanks to your support, you offered a veritable feast for those who sat at the LF table. But that is not all.... As these crises exploded in front of us, it became noticeably clear that our work in 2019—sitting at the table—prepared us for what lay ahead. LF was poised to make an impact given our proximity...
